How To Keep Everyone In Your Talent Pool Happy
After reading this article about work ethic in a multigenerational workplace, I got to thinking…
I remember the time when the mark of a good worker was how far they were willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to work long hours and over weekends. I think of how many family events people missed for the sake of making themselves noticed, or indispensable.
A new measurement for commitment
Thankfully those days are gone. Today’s younger generations won’t stand for it. It is often said that Gen Z’s view of hustle culture is a dim one. Rather than put all that time in at work, they prefer to focus on other things like their mental health over the health of a corporation.
It’s not that they don’t work at all, or they don’t have a good work ethic, they simply have a contemporary work ethic that is right for the times.
Treat people well
Leading a multigenerational workforce, and finding ways to create the ideal work environment is all about ensuring employee morale and productivity is high by balancing benefits with work demands in a fair equation.
At Accsurant, we believe that if you treat people right they will be loyal. It sounds like something anyone can say, but how many firms can walk the talk when work starts to pile up?
In our case, we treat our young, mostly twentysomething workforce well, and we get a lot in return. As an outsourcing firm, our people operate in different locations. We have an in-country account manager in the U.S., with many team members based in India.
When it comes down to the brass tacks, we pay very competitive salaries for the Indian market. It’s the right thing to do, but it’s also out of necessity. Good people know what they’re worth and we only hire good people.
We give our people plenty of time off and respectfully allow them to observe all the significant holidays they need. In this case, remote work works. In India, because commuting is often so difficult, working from home is a major win. Even in the U.S. the benefits of giving that commute time back to your employees is huge.
We take training and development seriously. We’ve spoken here about how we create career development pathways for all our staff from day one.
Targeted benefits get results
In a new world, we must understand that having a multigenerational workforce means our teams are not all motivated by the same thing, and they don’t all have the same attitude to grinding away at the wheel like in the past. Creating an attractive overall package is not only required in a talent crunch, but it is also an investment in people. This is, after all, an investment in your business.
